The Red Raiders were home against a Top 25 opponent in Iowa State and Coach Smitty. They came away licking their wounds after a 38-21 loss a really good team and Big 12 Champion Contender.
Coming into the game, Texas Tech revamped the entire playbook tossing the old one into the trash and lighting it on fire with a can of JP-5 Jet engine fuel smuggled away during Coach AUChase's military career. This was the first op-test for a new offensive approach to try and minimize turnovers to help QB Behren Morton out. The Red Raiders achieved their goal of a zero turnover game was Morton completed over 61% of his passes for 3 touchdowns and NO INTERCEPTIONS but it was not enough to get the win against a very consistent Iowa State.
The Cyclone's defense surrendered a few big plays and one lengthy 14 play drive but for the most part were able to keep Tech in check all day. The evidence is in The Red Raider's offensive line statistics. Only 4 players recorded a pancake block for 6 total. The offensive line struggled all game to create running lanes as star running back Tahj Boyd only rushed for 82 yards on 22 caries. 3.7 yards per carry is likely season low with zero runs of 20 or more yards. The inability to run and the defense not being able to get off the field doomed Tech.
The Red Raiders came off a grueling 4 game stretch and went 0-4 against Baylor, Colorado, Iowa State, and TCU. 3 of these 4 teams are in the playoff hunt and in contention to win the Big 12. There is no excuses regardless of the opponent but Tech closes the season with a home game against Oklahoma State and on the road in Morgantown. These teams are all competing to stay out of the bottom of the conference so it should be fun to see which teams prevail and show up with pride.
Iowa State traveled to Texas Tech and dominated up front on both sides. Coach Smitty said this is what he has been looking for the last two weeks in his big guys. The defensive line was very good in the run game. Interior lineman singleton had 4 tfls.
The Cyclones offense line was just as good allowing Jackson to get another 100 yard game. Also quarterback Becct had a great night throwing for over 300 yards. Just overall a good night to be a Cyclone fan.
Coach Smitty also said after the game that they will be ready to face the Jayhawks. This will be the biggest game of his career. I think a win and Iowa State has done enough to make the playoffs which was the goal.
