Iowa went to their rivals in Wisconsin and escaped with a win. In a game that saw 0 punts and only 1 turnover, it was a true battle the entire game.
In the first half, the two teams each scored two touchdowns. Late in the 2nd qtr, Iowa received a kickoff with 1:34 on the clock. They were able to mix a few runs together and get in fg position for kicker Drew Stevens who made the fg as time expired in the half to put the Hawkeyes up 17-14.
The Iowa defense was able to finally get a stop early in the 3rd qtr. QB McNamara was able to convert to 3rd passes into first downs including a 24 yard in route to freshman WR Vander Zee on 3rd & 14. The next play would see McNamara hit a PA pass to a HB out of the backfield for a 24 yard TD to put the Hawkeyes up 10 with 1 min left in the 3rd qtr. Iowa was able to get a 3 & out. Wisconsin would pin the Hawkeyes on their 5 yard line after a 64 yard punt.
Backed up on their 5 yard line, the Hawkeyes began marching for hopefully the TD that would put the game away. 8 plays later HB Johnson would fumble at the Wisc 24 yard line. 8 plays later the Badgers would score a TD to get back within 3 points.
Iowa would get the ball with 2:06 left in the game, but Wisconsin had all 3 timeouts left. HB Johnson, who was held to no runs of 20+ yard for the first time of the season, would get a 12 yard gain on first down. Next play would see Johnson go backwards for a loss of 3 yards. Wisconsin would use the first of their 3 timeouts. McNamara would WR Wetjen on a 14 yard comeback route for a first down to seal the game.
Losing to your rivals is always a tough pill to swallow, even tougher when it's in the fashion it was this past week in Madison.
Wisconsin fell to their rival Iowa 24-21, in a grind it out slugfest, a game that only saw 11 total possessions, 5 of which Wisconsin.
"What can I say, they have a gameplan, follow it to a tee, and it's extremely effective" said Coach RB, who once again cannot get over the hump in big games, losing another one score match up.
Losing close games has been a theme for Coach RB now over his 16 seasons in NDL. It's common from him as a coach to build up some buzz with 5-2 or 6-1 type of starts, only to finish down the stretch at 6-6 or 7-5. If he's every going to get into the conversation of competing for conference champs, he's going to have to figure it out on how to get the big stop, or how to close out a game.
