SMU Lulls Pitt to Sleep

Article By: Block M

PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA -- As the season enters the home stretch, the SMU Mustangs are finally hitting their stride.

After a mid-season QB controversy nearly derailed the SMU season, the Mustangs look as strong as they have all year as they put together another cohesive game against the Pitt Panthers on the road.

SMU would one again loss the toss and have the ball first but also once again got on the board first with a Collin Rogers field goal.

SMU would be up 10-0 before the Panthers went over the top for a big pass play to make the game 10-7.

A second Collin Rogers field goal would send the game to break at 13-7.

Late in the third quarter, SMU broke the game open when RB Brashard Smith would go 64 yards for a touchdown but Pitt would respond with a quick response to bring the game closer at 20-14.

QB Preston Stone, who re-confirmed his position as SMU starting QB, would connect with WR Jake Bailey on a nice corner route to give SMU breathing room and a 27-14 lead in the 4th.

At this point, the SMU defense started tee'ing off on Pitt QB Holstein. Book end rushers Jahfari Harvey and Elijah Roberts would combine for five sacks with most coming in the final quarter. The pressure would get to Holstein who would toss an interception to Cale Sanders Jr. who would house it to put the Mustangs ahead 33-14 after a failed 2-pt conversion.

The Panthers would muster one more touchdown and executed a sneaky fake to perfection for their last score of the game. SMU would match the score to end the game 40-22.

SMU improves to 6-2 and 4-0 in the ACC.
