The Appalachian State Mountaineers leaned on a dynamic offense and a stifling defense to claim a hard-fought 21-7 victory over Old Dominion in Norfolk on Saturday night. With clutch performances on both sides of the ball, the Mountaineers improved to 6-4, showcasing resilience and execution in a tightly contested matchup.
The scoring opened late in the first quarter when quarterback Joey Aguilar capped a methodical drive with a 1-yard rushing touchdown. Michael Hughes added the extra point, giving the Mountaineers a 7-0 lead with just 23 seconds remaining in the quarter. Aguilar’s mobility and decision-making set the tone early, keeping the Monarch defense off balance.
Old Dominion responded just before halftime, as quarterback Grant Wilson connected with Diante Vines for a 27-yard touchdown pass with 21 seconds left in the second quarter. Ethan Sanchez’s extra point tied the game at 7-7 heading into the locker room, with the Monarchs finding some rhythm against the Mountaineer secondary.
App State regained control in the third quarter with a quick-strike play that shifted momentum. Aguilar lofted a perfectly placed 46-yard touchdown pass to Kaedin Robinson at the 5:09 mark, showcasing his accuracy and Robinson’s ability to make big plays downfield. Hughes’ extra point made it 14-7.
The Mountaineers sealed the victory midway through the fourth quarter. Running back Anderson Castle powered through the defense for a 7-yard touchdown run, capping a drive that emphasized physicality and ball control. Hughes added his third extra point of the game, extending the lead to 21-7 with 6:36 to play.
Defensively, Appalachian State dominated, forcing five turnovers, including interceptions by Thomas Davis, Jordan Favors, Nate Johnson, Ronald Clarke, and Seth Robertson. Davis anchored the defense with eight tackles, while Brendan Harrington and Kyle Arnholt each added two tackles for loss. The Mountaineers’ pass rush pressured Grant Wilson throughout the game, limiting ODU to just 49 passing yards.
On the offensive side, Aguilar completed 10 of 16 passes for 139 yards, including his highlight-reel connection with Robinson. The ground game was steady, with Castle and Kanye Roberts combining for 112 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Special teams also contributed key plays, with Michael Hetzel’s 26-yard punt return setting up valuable field position, while Mitchell Lake’s consistent punting pinned the Monarchs deep in their own territory.
