The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets continue to turn the ball over on offense which ultimately lead to their loss against Miami. A one score game decided by a few turnovers. The defense held strong like always, just have to fix the offense.
Miami welcomed the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets to Coral Gables for this Week 11 showdown. Both teams came into this game with only one conference loss and both teams knew this could possibly determine who could make the ACC Championship game. The Hurricanes would get the ball first and would quickly move the ball down the field. Cam Ward would find Jacolby George for a 29 yard touchdown pass to take an early 7-0 advantage. Miami's defense would quickly make a big play as they would cause a fumble that would be recovered by D'Yoni Hill and great field position. The Canes would only need 4 plays as Damien Martinez would punch it in from 2 yards out. The extra point would be blocked by the Yellow Jackets and Miami would only lead 13-0. Georgia Tech would then get their offense rolling, they would go on a 7 play drive that would be capped with a 6 yard rushing touchdown from Jamal Haynes, cutting the lead to 13-7. The Canes offense would again move the ball, however this time they would be forced into a 45 yard field goal that would make the score 16-7. The Canes defense would again come up with a big turnover as Wesley Bissainthe would intercept a pass. Miami's offense would look to put up another big score and things were looking really positive. Miami would get the ball down to the 1 yard line, but Damien Martinez would be stopped on 3 goal line runs and the Georgia Tech defense would get a huge stop. Miami's defense would force the Yellow Jackets to punt and the offense would go right back to work. This time Miami would score on a pass play from Ward to Chris Johnson Jr for a 38 yard touchdown and a 23-7 advantage. The Yellow Jackets would put together a nice drive but would have to settle for a 42 yard field goal and Miami would lead 23-10. The Yellow Jackets defense would come up huge on the next Miami possession, intercepted a pass and returning it down to the Miami 9 yard line. The Canes defense would come up big with a huge 4th down stop from the 1 yard line, to have a 23-10 halftime lead. "Our defense played a huge first half," said Coach Dealer, "making some big stops and then also getting some huge turnovers to put our offense in nice scoring positions. I told our team at half that we would have to keep playing like that if we were going to knock off this Yellow Jackets team."
The second half would not be how the Hurricanes wanted it to start. The Georgia Tech offense would come out and go on a 10 play drive that would be capped by a 7 yard passing touchdown to cut the Canes lead to 23-17. Both teams defenses would really come up big the next few possessions. Georgia Tech would get an interception, Miami's defense would get another big 4th down stop inside the 5 yard line. Georgia Tech would then get another big interception, but would have to settle for a 55 yard field goal that would be wide right. The big drive to seal the game would happen with 4:27 left in the 4th quarter. Miami would rely heavily on their run game and Damien Martinez would not disappoint as he would carry the team all the way down inside the 5 yard line. Miami would have to settle for a field goal to go up 26-17, but it would be all they needed to get a big conference win. "Our defense really shut down a really good offensive team," said Dealer, "the big 4th down stops turned out huge for us to get the W in this game."
