The WKU Hilltoppers delivered a dominant 31-10 victory over the New Mexico State Aggies in a game defined by defensive strength, opportunistic turnovers, and effective offense. Despite a solid effort from the Aggies, WKU’s defense stifled their attack, forcing seven turnovers, while the Hilltoppers capitalized with a balanced offensive performance.
WKU's offense was efficient, racking up 358 total yards, with 236 passing yards and 111 rushing yards. WKU’s ability to sustain drives and create big plays in the air made the difference. The Hilltoppers converted 15 first downs, while the Aggies were limited to just eight.
The Aggies managed only 244 total yards, with 161 coming through the air. A combination of pressure from the Hilltopper secondary and misfires in key situations kept New Mexico State from finding any rhythm. The Aggies were unable to convert on third down, finishing 0-6, and struggled to move the ball in the red zone, scoring just one touchdown.
Turnovers were the story of the game. New Mexico State’s offense was plagued by interceptions, with WKU’s defense picking off seven passes, including multiple game-changing plays that led to short-field opportunities for the Hilltoppers. The Aggies’ inability to protect the ball—coupled with WKU’s opportunistic defense—was a major factor in the lopsided score line. In contrast, the Hilltoppers only turned the ball over twice, and their ability to take advantage of the turnovers and capitalize on favorable field position helped them extend their lead.
WKU was also efficient in the red zone, converting both of their trips into touchdowns. The Aggies, on the other hand, struggled inside the 20-yard line, managing just one touchdown and one field goal on their two red-zone possessions.
Penalties were minimal for both teams, with the Hilltoppers committing just two penalties for five yards compared to the Aggies' one penalty for five yards.
WKU's 31-10 victory was a clear example of how strong defense, effective ball control, and the ability to capitalize on mistakes can lead to a commanding win. The Aggies, despite some flashes of offensive promise, simply could not overcome the Hilltoppers' relentless defense and the turnover issues that plagued them throughout the game.
