In what has become a consistent theme since Notre Dame's surprise defeated in Palo Alto, the Irish opened up the offense early and the defense caused havoc, leading to a big Irish lead and eventual victory.
Notre Dame's Riley Leonard put up a bizarre statline of just 4 completion on 4 attempts, but for 3 touchdowns, all in the 1st quarter. Leonard connected with WR Jaden Greathouse for 30yds and 9yds, with a 22yd pass sandwiched in the middle, to TE Mitchell Evans. HB Jeremiyah Love capped the scoring in the 1st quarter at 28, with a 67yd TD run with 1:57 to go in the quarter.
The Notre Dame defense was as on point as the offense in the 1st quarter, consistently giving the Irish good field position and causing multiple turnovers. As the 1st quarter came to a close, Virginia seemed to find their stride, with a solid 10 play drive, but just after the start of the 2nd quarter, SR LB Jack Kiser intercepted an errant Virginia pass and took it 95 yds, to put Notre Dame up 35-0.
The starting offense closed out the first and the backups filled in the 2nd half as Notre Dame and Virginia traded some blows in the running games, ultimately ended the game at 35-0.
Coach Reign: "Coach Doc and I have went back and forth on the gridiron for years. Today was our day. We've been on the other side before and likely will be at some point in the future. So we're grateful for the win and classy performance as always. Here's to many more in our years ahead! Good luck Coach Doc!"
