Waco, TX — The Baylor Bears, the nation’s No. 1-ranked team, showcased why they remain unbeaten, dismantling the visiting Houston Cougars 45-14 in a one-sided contest on Thanksgiving morning. With the victory, Baylor improved to 11-0, continuing their march toward a potential playoff berth.
Houston (3-8) entered the game with a spark of hope behind freshman quarterback Caleb McMickle, who made his first career start in place of the benched Donovan Smith. But the Bears’ top-ranked defense suffocated the Cougars' high-octane run 'n' shoot offense, limiting them to a mere 195 passing yards and 245 total yards. Baylor’s defense also forced three turnovers, effectively neutralizing any threat from the Cougars' attack.
McMickle, making his debut under the brightest spotlight, completed 18 of 33 passes for 172 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Despite the tough outing, his composure impressed some onlookers. “The kid’s got heart,” said a Houston assistant coach after the game. “He battled, but Baylor is Baylor for a reason.”
Adding intrigue to the postgame narrative, Houston head coach Yragha1 was conspicuously absent from media availability. The university provided no clarification on why the coach was not available for comment, sparking speculation about internal issues or dissatisfaction with the team's performance.
For Houston, the focus shifts to regrouping and finishing the season strong. For Baylor, the dream of a national championship remains within reach, and this performance only strengthened their case as the team to beat.
Coming off their "Trap Game" vs winless WVA and Coach Lone last block, Coach Vegas committed that his Baylor Bears would not be stuck in the mud "Looking ahead" to the big 1 v 2 matchup that's lurking ahead of them in Lawrence, Kansas and the Jayhawks.
Baylor came out with confidence on offense and defense and moved the ball with relative ease for most of the game, especially via the run game where they had 8 different players tally a carry, as they amassed 322 yards total on the ground.
Houston kept it close early, but an explosive 28 point quarter blew this thing wide open, which included a DJ Coleman pick 6 to put this baby to sleep in the first half.
As always Coach Yragha fought till the end, but the Bears were just too much on this day. Following the defeat there were even surprising rumors of Yragha moving on from his beloved Cougs as he remains a beloved coach in the NDL.
