In a crucial Mountain West Conference showdown, the Wyoming Cowboys traveled to Boise State to face the Broncos, with championship aspirations on the line. However, Boise State quickly dashed those hopes by jumping out to a commanding lead early in the game. The Broncos never looked back, maintaining control throughout and cruising to a decisive 44-29 victory. With the loss, Wyoming now stands at 8-3 for the season, suffering their third defeat. The Cowboys will now turn their attention to finishing the season strong as they prepare to host the Washington State Cougars in their final game of Season 30.
Boise, ID - Coach Roc and the Broncos went out with a bang for what is likely their final home game of the season barring a massive collapse from SDSU, and may have secured their long-odds spot in the MWC Championship pending a few tricky tie-breakers. Boise finishes conference play at 6-1, same as last year, but in far more commanding fashion than Season 30.
Alshon Jeanty made his case for the Doak Walker award and Heisman Canidacy with several dazzling runs on the day. He logged his season long carry of 92 yards following a red-zone interception by stalwart QB Evan Svoboda. While he amassed 347 yards through the air in a dogged effort, it was the 4 turnovers (3 INT, 1 Fumble) that did the Cowboys in. They regularly moved the ball against BSU's bend don't break offense, however the Boise D was able to keep the Cowboy offense largely in check in the first half and jumped to 28-14 halftime lead.
Maddux Madsen did what he was asked to do and managed the game to the tune of 9/10 passing for 184 yards and a TD. Jeanty racked up a ridiculous 347 yards on the day along with 5 TDs, putting him within 1 TD of Barry Sanders' TD record, and sits just 3 yards away from smashing the yardage record as well. Should the Broncos make the championship game, Jeanty should easily surpass the record.
The real question is will they make it? With Iowa and Kaleb Johnson all but assured to make the Big 10 title game, Johnson and the Hawkeyes have their remaining game against Nebraska and the title game to surpass both Sanders & Jeanty. As it stands, Jeanty holds a 211 yard lead over Johnson with at least one more game to play for Iowa. Award voters are eager to see how this season will finish now that the Broncos have an outside shot at the title game themselves.
