Bulls Speed too much for UMass

Article By: Cnasty

The USF Bulls proved too fast and too strong for the UMass Minutemen, securing a 38-21 win in a high-energy game tonight. From the opening kickoff, it was clear that the Bulls’ speed would be a decisive factor, as they repeatedly outmaneuvered UMass on both sides of the ball.

First Half: Bulls Set the Pace

USF wasted no time establishing their dominance landing a huge uppercut bomb after UMass got out to a lead killing all momentum. This was a foreshadowing of things to come all night.

UMass responded with a missed field goal and then a long punt return by USF just really turned the tide and the blowout was on.

The defining storyline of this matchup was the difference in speed between the two teams. USF’s receivers consistently outran UMass defensive backs, and the Bulls’ offensive line gave their playmakers room to operate in space. On defense, USF’s linebackers and secondary caught all errant passes ending drives by UMass and killing any chances for a comeback.

UMass fought hard, but the Minutemen simply couldn’t keep up with the Bulls’ breakneck pace. For USF, this win highlighted their ability to exploit teams with their speed, a factor that will serve them well as they look to make a run in conference play.

Excellent game as always with USMarine and looking forward to the rematch next year.

USF Bulls Hold Off UMass Minutemen Comeback, Secure Win at Raymond James Stadium

Tampa, FL – The USF Bulls withstood a third-quarter surge by the visiting UMass Minutemen to secure a 38-21 victory at Raymond James Stadium on Saturday. USF fans were treated to an exciting back-and-forth contest, marked by high-energy plays and a pivotal 75-yard touchdown pass that sealed the game for the Bulls.

UMass opened the game strong with a balanced offensive approach, mixing runs and passes effectively to drive down the field and put up the first points of the night, going up 7-0. But the Bulls responded in force. Quarterback Byrum Brown quickly led a scoring assault, orchestrating four touchdown drives and adding a field goal to give USF a commanding 31-7 lead early in the 3rd quarter.

After a sluggish first half, UMass found new life in the third quarter, scoring two consecutive touchdowns. First a 6 yard TD run by HB Jalen John followed up by Quarterback Taison Phommachanh hitting a 9-yard strike to wide receiver Jakobie Keeney-James. The Minutemen were within striking distance at 31-21, with momentum on their side.

But USF’s star wide receiver Jequan Smith put an end to UMass’s comeback hopes. Taking advantage of a blown coverage by the Minutemen’s secondary, Smith broke free for a 75-yard touchdown reception, effectively shutting the door on UMass with a 38-21 lead. The Minutemen defense had lost track of Smith in coverage, and he made them pay, using his speed to widen the lead and close out the game.

The Bulls now look forward to a week off, enjoying a well-earned bye in the Florida sunshine before facing the Toledo Green Wave in Week 5, the final game of their non-conference slate. With this latest win, USF moves to 2-1 on the season, eyeing a promising year with confidence.
