Tahji Brooks did whatever he wanted to do all game. He is a monster to bring down. Fresno and Texas Tech were actually tied up late in 3rd, but TT pulled away in the 4th with a pick 6 and bruising running of Brooks. Offensively Fresno actually did well in the air and the ground with Sherrod eclipsing 150 once again. If we only knew how to stop teams from scoring we may be dangerous. Kudos to TT for a good game.
The Texas Tech Red Raiders defeated Fresno State 59-38 in a thrilling matchup that featured two coaches who faced off last season at their previous schools, Troy and UAB.
The game was closely contested, with Texas Tech leading just 28-24 at halftime. Both teams displayed offensive firepower, but the Red Raiders ultimately found a way to pull away in the second half.
Quarterback Behren Morton was nearly flawless, completing 17 of 21 passes for 267 yards and a touchdown, boasting an impressive 203 QBR. His ability to manage the game and exploit opportunities allowed Texas Tech to keep their offense in rhythm. Remarkably, the Red Raiders faced only three third-down situations and did not punt at all, highlighting their offensive efficiency.
Running back Tahj Brooks was a standout performer, carrying the ball 21 times for 225 yards and five touchdowns. His knack for breaking tackles—he shed nine in total—enabled him to average over 10 yards per carry. With 15 rushing touchdowns through just four games, Brooks is quickly becoming a key player in Texas Tech's offensive arsenal.
As the game moved into the second half, Texas Tech's defense made a crucial play that shifted the momentum. Defensive back Maurion Horn intercepted a pass and returned it 46 yards for a touchdown, marking his second consecutive game with a pick-six. This electrifying play energized the Red Raiders and allowed them to extend their lead.
While Texas Tech’s offense was impressive, the defense faced challenges in containing Fresno State's passing attack. The Bulldogs managed to move the ball effectively, but the Red Raiders capitalized on critical mistakes to secure the victory.
As Texas Tech looks ahead in the season, they will need to shore up their defensive inconsistencies while continuing to leverage their explosive offense, led by the dynamic duo of Morton and Brooks. With this win, the Red Raiders are positioning themselves as a formidable contender in the weeks to come.
Coach AUChase told us after the game "This was a great matchup. I know the scoreboard doesn't reflect that but this was a really closely contested game throughout until the 4th quarter. We also had a late score that makes it look worse than it actually was. Fresno had us on our heels and our secondary was getting carved up. I made the decision to swap out free safety out mid game trying anything to generate a spark but it was a struggle for us. The defensive line, even with numbers, could not contain the edge and we were scrambling to mix things up. We get back in the conference fold next week and we can't trot this same defense out there if we want to achieve our goals for this season. Despite a talent gap, Fresno really coached 'em up and came to play."
