Jaguars bow out in Season Opener

Article By: Meros

In a tough matchup, Freshman QB Gio Lopez fell short, losing to Northwestern with a final score that reflected their offensive dominance. Despite The Jaguars forcing two turnovers, including two interceptions, they struggled to keep pace, gaining only 298 total offensive yards while Northwestern controlled the ground game with 193 rushing yards, nearly doubling the Jaguars 95 yards, which helped them hold the ball for over 17 minutes.

While the Jaguars offense showed moments of promise they just couldn’t convert consistently on third downs, going just 1-for-5. Although both teams had efficient red-zone play, the Jaguars couldn’t capitalize on their possessions. Unfortunately despite a penalty-free game, South Alabama's inability to sustain drives ultimately cost them the game.

Article By: footballkelly31

Evansville Illinois hosted a battle between the Northwestern Wildcats and the South Alabama Cougars.
The Wildcats received the opeing kick off and put together a methodical 15 play drive but had to settle for 3 after getting sacked on the first and third plays after getting into the red zone. 3-0
South Alabama would grind out a nice drive but they took a sack and were force to try a 51 yard field goal which was pushed left.
Both teams would swap punts and on their third position the Wildcats would break a 51 yard run as Porter would follow his blockers and go untouched. 10-0
The Cougars were driving and crossed into Northwestern territory for the second time however they would trow a pick and give the Wildcats the ball with a chance to really pull away.
Northwestern would however give the ball right back after a horrible read in which his wideout was wide open, Lausch decided to toss it to the slot receiver. It was picked off and returned the length of the field for a momentum swinging pick six. 10-7.
Lausch would shake it off and sling teh ball down field to get his team in range for a 55 yard field goal attempt right before the end of half but it would come up just short.
The Cougars recieved to open the second half and had a beautiful run from 58 yards out to take the lead 14-10.
Northwestern would not get rattled and put together a 10 play drive that was capped off with a wide open tight end in the corner which Lausch nearly over threw. 17-14.
South Alabama came right back down the field and got on teh door step of the red zone but Devin Turner would undercut the post route and get the ball back for his team up by 3.
Northwesterns 8 play drive would stahl right around mid field and the Caugars would get the ball back with 4 minutes left at their own 16 with the score 17-14.
Gio Lopez would overthrow his back out of the back field and than be hit as he threw on thrid down to force a punt.
Northwestern would score on the third play with a quick slant to Kirtz who would shake a tackle and go 66 yards to put them up 24-14. with just under 3 minutes left in the game.
South Alabama would continue to fight and would score from 4 yards out with a nice slip screen and a broken tackle but a failed 2 pt conversion would have them down 24-20 with just over a minute and only one time out. They would need an onside kick recovery to keep hope alive. The kick was nice and got between the wildcat players but would be picked up just in time by the hands team. Two runs to convert a first and kneel downs to seal the game.
Good Game Meros, mixed up really nice and enjoyed the chess game of it. Welcomed addition to the league and best of luck this season.
