Illinois drops to 0-2 on the season behind a lackluster performance on defense particularly against Heisman front runner Ashton Jeanty. Jeanty torched the Illini on the ground for over 225 yards and 3 touchdowns on the ground and another in the air.
Boise St. passed the ball a paltry 6 times the entire game and opted to feed Jeanty the ball in a variety of ways and Illinois simply had no answer in front of their home crowd.
Illinois looks to regroup and get ready for a tough B1G season and if they don’t figure out how to play better on defense then it will be a long conference schedule.

Champaign, IL - After another slow start to the season, Coach Roc and the Broncos got it in gear in a big way wrapping up their home and home series with Illinois. Coach Hail was brought in before any games were played by the Illini as Coach Swelly suddenly vacated his newly acquired spot and Retired. This put Coach Hail in a tough spot given that he had limited time to get up to speed with the team coming in after a 2 week bye.
Coach Roc was prepared after watching a good portion of his Mountain West counterparts romp in Block 1 and Block 2. Not wanting to be left out of the race, Coach Roc put together a 10 play all run opening drive that he so loving refers to as the Jeanty Show offense.
Much maligned QB Malachi Nelson seems to have been benched for Sophmore Maddux Madsen who did not have to do much today as he only attempted 6 passes, completing 3 though all went for 20+ yards finishing with 123 yards total. When asked about the gameplan for the day Coach Roc said "We had a gameplan to get Maddux comfortable, but our runs were far more successful than what were planning on so we just went with the hot hand.
Hot hand was an understatement. Jeanty finished with almost 300 yards of offense, racking up 224 yards on the ground and 53 yards through the air to go with 5 touchdowns. Jeanty was mostly contained in the away game at Okie St, after breaking the 200 yd threshold agains the tough Michigan D during a tough opening week loss.
The Defense came to play as well, forcing 3 turnovers and mostly containing Illini QB Luke Altmeyer and Kadin Feagin after an offensive breakout last week against Nebraska for Coach Hail's debut. Boise St collects its first win of the season, ending a 5 game losing streak dating back to the end of the regular season against Oregon St. Next up is a tough matchup against Coach Matt who Ike-Turnered Boise with Northwestern in their bowl game last season. Now at his alma-mater, we'll see what gameplan he has for the Broncos.
