Cowboys Edge Boilermakers

Article By: uf83198

In an exciting college football showdown, the Oklahoma State Cowboys edged out the Purdue Boilermakers with a final score of 23-22. The game was a tightly contested battle that showcased the strengths and weaknesses of both teams.
The first quarter began with Oklahoma State taking an early lead thanks to a 24-yard field goal by Logan Ward. However, Purdue responded in the second quarter with a 33-yard field goal from Spencer Porath, equalizing the score at 3-3. The Boilermakers then surged ahead after a 15-yard touchdown pass from Hudson Card to Devin Mockobee, putting them up 10-3.
Oklahoma State was not deterred, as Alan Bowman connected with Ollie Gordon II for a spectacular 54-yard touchdown pass to bring the Cowboys back into contention, followed by another successful kick from Logan Ward. Purdue managed to add another field goal by Porath, making the score 13-10 at halftime.
The second half opened with Oklahoma States Alan Bowman scoring on a 1-yard run, extended the Cowboys lead to 17-10. Purdue countered with another field goal by Spencer Porath, narrowing the deficit to just four points.
The fourth quarter saw Purdues Mockobee find the end zone again, scoring on a 3-yard run, but their two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the score at 17-16 in favor of Oklahoma State. The Cowboys quickly retaliated with Ollie Gordons own 1-yard run, although they too failed to convert a two-point attempt, making it a precarious 23-16.
Purdue kept the pressure on and managed to score once more with a late touchdown, yet their efforts ended in vain as time ran out, led by an interception by DE Kody Walterscheid, finalizing the game at 23-22 in favor of the Cowboys.
Alan Bowman had a uneasy performance, completing 16 of 23 passes for 203 yards a touchdown, but 3 interceptions. Ollie Gordon II shone as well, leading the receiving corps with 101 yards and a touchdown, along with a rushing touchdown. The defense for Oklahoma State was led by Nick Martin, who had a game-high 13 tackles.
Overall, the Cowboys displayed resilience and grit, overcoming Purdue to secure a hard-fought victory on their home turf.

Purdue Throws Away Opening Game

Interceptions were the theme of the day in this one so it was extremely fitting that the game would end on one last interception thrown by Purdue QB Hudson Card.

The Boilermakers fell 23-22 in their Season 30 opener against the Oklahoma State Cowboys. This game was back and forth all evening as neither team could get separation on the scoreboard. The primary reason for this was 7 interceptions thrown by the two teams combined. Each time it looked like one or the other had seized momentum and would be ready to capitalize, they would throw another interception.

However, there has to be a winner, and it looked like Purdue might come up with it after driving the length of the field with under a minute go. The Cowboys took the final lead of the game 23-22 with a minute and a half to play. After missing a two-point conversion attempt, Purdue was primed to have one last chance to win.

A successful 12-yard run on first down got them off to a good start and had the enthusiam riding high. The Cowboy defense was smothering on the next play and Card had to check down to Jahmal Edrine for a short gain. However, on the third play of the drive, Card found star WR CJ Smith on an out rout which he took 42 yards down the sideline and deep in to Cowboy territory. It looks like all Purdue had to do was center the ball and kick the field goal to win.

However, Coach Razor thought otherwise and wanted to get as close as possible for the kick. All day long the crowd noise and Boone Pickens Stadium had been giving his team fits. There were no assurances that his kicker would be steady at that range. After an unsuccessful run on first down, Coach Razor decided to dial up a TE screen play to hopefully catch the Cowboys off guard. That would not be the case as the call played right in to their hands and there was an Okie State DE waiting in the passing lane to pick off the screen pass and seal the victory for the Cowboys.

After the game, Coach Razor took full credit for the call saying it was mine and mine alone. We should have done what the statistics say to do but I trusted my gut on this one and was hoping to give our boys the best chance to win.

They'll live to fight another day but they'll also need to shake the pain of this loss off fast as next up is perennial powerhouse Notre Dame.
