Charlotte @ Liberty:

October 2024 – Lynchburg, VA

The Charlotte 49ers faced off against the Liberty Flames on a crisp fall afternoon in a thrilling matchup that showcased both teams' determination and skill. While the game was hard-fought from start to finish, Charlotte ultimately emerged victorious, handing Liberty a tough loss in front of a passionate home crowd.

First Half: A Strong Start for Charlotte

The game kicked off with high energy from both teams, but it was Charlotte who seemed to seize the early momentum. The 49ers' offense, led by quarterback Max Brown, was sharp in the opening drive, moving the ball effectively down the field. The running game, led by Cartevious Norton, provided balance, setting up Brown for a perfect touchdown pass to wide receiver Justin Olson, putting Charlotte on the board Late in the 1st quarter with a 7-0 lead.

Liberty, however, struggled to find a rhythm on offense. The Flames’ quarterback Kaidon Salter and his receivers were not on the same page in the first half while salter threw 2 interceptions and looked to be in trouble early. Charlotte capitalizes on the turnovers force by their defense, when Norton found the endzone 7-yds out and C.J. Burton picks off Kaidon Salter on the Flames next drive to put the 49ers up 21-0.

Despite Charlotte’s early success, Liberty’s offense seemed to get something going on their next drive. The Flames put together an impressive drive to close out the first half, and Kaidon Salter finished the drive off with a 1-yd QB sneak to go into the half down 21-7. Liberty showed no life for most of the first half, but after the late touchdown by Salter, the Flames looked to grab momentum coming out at the half.

Second Half: Liberty storms back

The second half began with Liberty looking to regroup and answer back, and they did just that. The Flames came out of the locker room with fire, scoring on their first 2 drives of the third quarter thanks to a 12-yard touchdown run by running back Quinton Cooley, and a 1-yd run by Austin Henderson to tie the game up at 21.

Charlotte’s offense fought valiantly, with Max Brown connecting on some big throws to Jairus Mack and Justin Olson. The 49ers’ offense took the lead back on a 39-yd pass from Brown to Mack to put the 49ers up 29-21. Liberty’s defense, anchored by Defensive End C.J. Bazile Jr, stepped up when needed in the second half.

In the fourth quarter, Liberty found some holes in the Charlotte defense. Salter found wide receiver Tyson Mobley deep down the field for a 41-yard touchdown pass, to tie the game back up at 28, with just under six minutes to play. Charlotte quarterback was unstoppable in this game, Brown led the 49ers on an impressive drive late in the game and it was finished off with a Brown touchdown pass to Jonathan Muldrow the put the 49ers up 35-28 with under 2:30 to go. The Flames saw themselves down late, but Kaidon Salter looked to lead the flames to an impressive comeback. with the help of Quinton Cooley and Salter, the flames had the ball in the redzone with under 10 seconds to go and needing a touchdown. On the next play, Salter found Treon Sibley in the middle of the endzone to tie the game up at 35.

The Flames sideline erupted and looked to head to overtime. However, the excitement didn't last long, when Max Brown and the Charlotte offense took the field with 4 seconds left, and Brown caught the Flames defense sleeping when he saw Justin Olson wide open for a game winning 75-yd touchdown pass.
