Western Kentucky defeated Coach Carman's Sam Houston team last season, and did the same this season.
Behind a solid run game, and 2 FGs to make it a 2 score game, the Hilltoppers didn't do much wrong.
UCLA struggled to pass, though their run game had lots of different guys touching the ball. And when there was a blitz on first down, Matavao sometimes found himself wide open with 15 yards of clearance. He had his 2nd game in a row with 2 TD's (and the only TD's for UCLA in this one). The cat and huge mouse game led to some triple coverages (and fair enough), which then opened up the middle of the field for some other players to get receptions. Unfortunately, no one could really do much damage to the Hilltoppers defense, other than the big TE.
In an exciting clash at the Rose Bowl, Western Kentucky University edged out UCLA with a final score that reflected a hard-fought battle. WKU showcased a potent offensive performance, racking up 345 total yards compared to UCLA’s 331. The Hilltoppers excelled in the passing game, amassing 306 yards through the air while limiting the Bruins to 280.
Despite the loss, UCLA's tight end proved to be a standout player, consistently making crucial catches and demonstrating remarkable skill. He was virtually unstoppable, helping his team maintain offensive momentum and contributing significantly to their overall yardage. WKU had a stand out receiver as well in WR Easton Messer who was able to rack up 209 yards and 2 TD's. Both players took turns shining for their respective teams.
WKU's defense held strong, forcing four turnovers, including two key interceptions, while UCLA struggled on third downs, converting only 4 of 10 attempts.
Ultimately, WKU’s efficiency in the red zone, scoring two touchdowns and one field goal, as well as a 50 yard FG, to UCLA’s two touchdowns, proved pivotal.
