First Half: Liberty Holds Strong Early, But LSU Pulls Away

The game began with a competitive energy in Williams Stadium, as Liberty looked to challenge the SEC powerhouse. Quarterback Kaidon Salter and the Flames’ offense found some early success, even managing to put up the game’s first points. A methodical drive culminated in a 13-yard touchdown run from running back Quinton Cooley, giving Liberty a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter.

However, LSU quickly answered. Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, who has been in stellar form all season, engineered a rapid response. After a few sharp completions to star wideout Kyren Lacy and the last one for an 8-yard touchdown reception by Lacy. The Tigers quickly made a statement in this game and wouldn't let up afterwards. The Tigers defense made it hard for Liberty to move the ball heading into the 2nd quarter and forced a turnover that resulted in an 89-yd pick 6.

The very next Flames drive resulted in a 3 and out and was forced to punt the ball back to an explosive LSU offense. Not only did the Flames defense had no answers, but the special team's unit was also the same way, when Zavion Thomas returned the punt 79-yds to give LSU a 21-7 lead going into the half.

Second Half: LSU Pulls Away with Explosive Plays

The third quarter was largely a continuation of LSU’s dominance. Liberty’s defense, which had been gashed all night, had no answer for Nussmeier and the Tigers’ multifaceted attack. Nussmeier extended LSU’s lead with a dazzling 35-yard touchdown pass to CJ Daniels, who, putting the Tigers up 28-7.

Liberty’s offense, which had shown signs of life early in the first half but couldn’t find a rhythm. Salter was intercepted once again midway through the third quarter, and LSU capitalized with another touchdown. Caden Durham took off for a 79-yd touchdown run to put this game well out of reach, increasing LSU’s lead to 35-7. Toward the end of the third quarter LSU defense put a stamping on this game when Harlod Perkins stripped Salter of the football and returned it for another defensive touchdown, just adding on to a spectacular game by the Tigers defense.

Final Score: LSU 42, Liberty 7
