In this Week 5 game, Miami welcomed the Hokies to Hard Rock Stadium for a big Rivalry game. Even though it was early the momentum for this game switched really quickly. Cam Ward looked to be sacked for a big loss, however he got out of it and was able to connect with Isaiah Horton on a 34 yard pass play. The very next play Damien Martinez took the handoff and would go 34 yards for the score and a 7-0 lead. The Canes defense would quickly hold the Hokies to a 3 and out and the Miami offense was right back on the field. This time the Canes would put together an 8 play drive with Ward hitting Elijah Arroyo on a 16 yard TD reception to go up 14-0 on the Hokies. The Hokies would again be stopped on their next possession and the Canes offense would be right back on the field. Miami would use another big play from Ward to Arroyo to set them up inside the 5 yard line. The next play Chris Johnson Jr would score from 5 yards out for the 21-0 lead. Virginia Tech would put together a very nice drive but would be stopped once they got inside the 10 yard line. They would settle for a 28 yard field goal cutting the lead to 21-3. The Canes would put together a very well orchestrated drive as they would go 13 plays scoring on a Damien Martinez 3 yard run with under :30 to go up 28-3. "That drive at the end of the 2nd quarter was well done by our offense," said Coach Dealer, "they came out and executed everything just as we have been practicing."
The second half would not start out like the Hokies were hoping. Miami Jaden Harris would intercept on the opening drive and the Canes offense would look to really shut the door on Virginia Tech. They would only need one play as Ward would hit Xavier Restrepo for a 26 yard touchdown and a 35-3 advantage. Miami would get their second and third interceptions on the next two Hokies drives. One of them leading to a 50 yard field goal by Andres Borregales and a 38-3 lead. The Hokies would tack on a 4th quarter touchdown to make the final score of 38-10.
"I felt really good with how our team played today," said Dealer, "after a heartbreaking loss to South Carolina in week 4, to come out and play like that really showed our boys are filled with some grit."
