FAYETTEVILLE, AR – The Tennessee Volunteers left Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium with a dominant 31-14 victory over the Arkansas Razorbacks, capping off a strong defensive effort and explosive plays on offense.
First Quarter: Trading Blows Early
The game began with both teams showing flashes of their offensive potential. Tennessee struck first as running back Dillon Sam powered through the Arkansas defense for an 11-yard touchdown run. However, Arkansas quickly responded, with Taylen Green connecting with Andrew Armstrong on an 8-yard touchdown pass to even the score at 7-7 as the quarter came to a close.
Second Quarter: Tennessee’s Defense Sets the Tone
Momentum shifted early in the second quarter when Tennessee’s defense stood tall on the goal line, stopping Arkansas from taking the lead. The Volunteers capitalized on the momentum immediately, as Dillon Sam broke free for a stunning 78-yard touchdown run, electrifying the Tennessee sideline and giving them a 14-7 lead heading into halftime.
Third Quarter: Volunteers Create Separation
Tennessee extended its lead in the third quarter thanks to its defense. Jacoby Thomas jumped a pass from Green, returning it 42 yards for a pick-six, putting Tennessee up 21-7. Arkansas, refusing to back down, responded when Cafe Brown hauled in a 17-yard touchdown pass from Green, trimming the lead back to 21-14.
Tennessee nearly added another score when Dillon Sam broke free for a 15-yard run, but he was stopped just short, keeping the margin at seven points heading into the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter: Tennessee Closes It Out
The fourth quarter saw Tennessee control the pace of play, keeping Arkansas out of rhythm. The only points of the quarter came from Max Gilbert, who drilled a field goal to push the lead to 24-14. With Arkansas desperate for a comeback, Tennessee sealed the game with a late drive that ended in another Max Gilbert field goal, finalizing the score at 31-14.
Postgame Reactions
Despite the loss, the Arkansas coaching staff was generally pleased with their team’s effort but acknowledged missed opportunities, especially in the second quarter.
“We had a couple of moments that could’ve changed the game,” Arkansas’ coach said. “Tennessee had a great game plan, and we’ve got to tip our hat to them for executing.”
Meanwhile, Tennessee’s head coach praised his team’s resilience, particularly on defense. “Our guys stepped up in key moments, especially with that goal-line stand and Jacoby’s interception,” he said. “Proud of the way we finished the game.”
Looking Ahead
With the win, Tennessee continues to build momentum as they head into the back half of the season, while Arkansas will look to regroup and capitalize on the positives from this matchup.
If this game was any indication, the Volunteers are a force to be reckoned with, and their defense might just be the key to a deep SEC run.
