It was a Sunflower Showdown for the ages but not in the way that the Kansas Jayhawks were hoping it would go. The first half was electric as the two rivals schools traded blows back and forth and went in to the half all tied at 21. The Wildcat fanbase was on edge as Kansas got the ball out of the half and looked poised to potentially make some noise.
However, that would not be the case as one of the wildest Wildcat quarters ever was about to unfold. Over the length of the third quarter, not a single offensive touchdown was scored by either team however Kansas State saw their lead grow up 21 points which allowed them to essentially put the game away. They did this through three separate return touchdowns by their defense and special teams.
To kick off the scoring, elite Kansas State DB Dante Thomas secured his 2nd of 3 interceptions in the game and returned it 40 yards untouched for a touchdown. Next, potential All-American Punt Returner Dylan Edwards faked out everyone west of Lawrence with his juke moves on his way to a 72 yard punt return. Not to let anyone forget his name, including the Kansas head coach, Edwards followed it up again on the very next Jayhawks series with a 62 yard return for a TD that scared the Kansas punter so bad he ran in to the sidelines instead of making a play.
It was a sight to behold as the huge 3rd quarter gave Kansas State all the momentum and they cruised from their comfortably to the win. Kansas now falls to 4-3 on the year and is still searching for 2 more wins to become bowl eligible.
The first half of the heated rivalry matchup between Kansas State and Kansas lived up to the hype, with both teams battling to a 21-21 tie at halftime. But when the third quarter began, mayhem erupted.
Dante Thomas delivered a defensive masterclass with three interceptions, while Dylan Edwards electrified the crowd with back-to-back punt return touchdowns. The stunning sequence turned a competitive game into a rout, cementing this contest as one of the most unforgettable in the rivalry’s history.
Kansas State fans will be celebrating this victory for years, while Kansas is left searching for answers after a disastrous third quarter that turned their hopes into nightmares.
