Dijon "Mustard" Stanley returned the opening kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown and Junior Tafuna rumbled 22 yards for a big man touchdown, but the Utah offense couldn't make enough plays to pull off the upset over Colorado as the Buffaloes won 28-21 on Thursday night.
The Utes were playing in hostile territory but silenced the crowd early as Stanley took a corner kickoff and ripped through a hole for an untouched score. It was a quiet day for the back otherwise, as he had just five carries for 34 yards and two catches for 14 yards.
Utah quarterback Cam Rising threw a crucial interception in the endzone but completed 16 of his 18 passes for 166 yards and added a beautiful touchdown pass to put Utah ahead in the third quarter.
But the Utes failed to score points on their opening drive, stalling out inside the five before missing a short field goal. They also fell two yards short of gaining a first and goal inside the final minute, where a touchdown would've tied the game.
Travis Hunter was held to just two catches, but the second was a 75-yard toss sweep that swung the game in Colorado's favorin the third quarter. "He's just so fast and talented, and you can only keep him locked down for so long," Coach JasonUK said after the game. "We wanted to limit the deep ball, and credit Colorado and Coach DCanady as they took what we gave them on the ground."
Utah falls to 7-2 on the season and enters a critical stretch, with a rivalry game against BYU likely deciding the outcome of JasonUK's future with the school.
