I have to be honest, in the first minute or so of this game the coaching staff on the verge of losing it once yet again due to poor execution. On the 2nd snap DB Dillon Tatum had a pass throw directly to him, for what seemed like a sure pick 6, yet the ball bounced away as is if covered in butter. The defense would recover and force a punt moments later, but once again the coaching staffs blood pressure went through the roof as WR Montorie Foster Jr. was set up on the 30 with the ball coming right to him, and he ran away from it for some unknow reason, costing the offense more than 15 yards of field position.
2 plays later RB Nathan Carter would help ease the minds of the home crowd and coaching staff, as a run up the middle that seemed to be bottle up saw Carter stay patient and make one cut to his left and then find nothing but open field in front of him for a 79 yard touchdown.
The next Rutgers drive would see Tatum now with some redemption, as on a 3rd and short the Scarlet Knights went with a power run for the QB and Tatum was able to force a fumble and set the Sparty offense up with a short field. The next couple plays only yielded a 3 yards, but on 3rd down QB Aidan Chiles found WR Alante Brown deep down the middle and another Spartan touchdown.
The Spartan defense would stay strong and force another 3 and out in the following drive, but the offense would only be able to manage a long FG attempt, and while it was miss, it was far closer than most of the misses this season, so there is that at least.
But the offense would have to wait long to try again, and the Rutgers QB was not the same page as his receiver and threw pass well behind him and directly to Spartan DB Ed Woods. Now with a short field once again the Spartan offense took over, and this time it was RB Kay'ron Lynch-Adams getting in on the action, finding paydirt from 7 yards out and a 21-0 Sparty lead.
From here the home crowd was turned up, and the Rutgers players were clearly being impacted by it, as is the field was slanted significantly in the favor of the home squad.
The Rutgers offense would keep fight, and get to the Spartan 40 on the ensuring drive, but a late throw to the outside proved costly as DB Charles Brantley jumped on the opportunity and took the pass more than 60 yards for a score, and all but killing the potential for any drama in this contest.
From there the Spartans would prioritize protecting the ball and not allowing the big play, and subsequently the Rutgers offense would not cross midfield again till the final drive of the game.
