Cougars Claw Back, Dominate Second Half in Win Over Spartans

San Jose, CA – What started as a tight battle turned into a second-half statement for the Washington State Cougars, who stormed past the San Jose State Spartans with a 41-14 road victory.

San Jose State struck first with a 10-yard touchdown run by Chalk in the first quarter, the lone score of the opening frame. Washington State answered in the second with a short 4-yard touchdown pass from Mateer to Freeman, but Chalk found the end zone again to give the Spartans a 14-7 edge.

That would be the last time San Jose State saw the scoreboard.

The Cougars responded with a dominant 34-point unanswered surge, locking down the Spartans offense and putting the game away with a relentless defensive effort. Washington State forced six second-half interceptions, completely disrupting any rhythm for the home team.

Standout defensive back Smithson continued his red-hot form following his Apple Cup MVP performance, notching two interceptions, including a pick-six that swung the momentum heavily in WSU’s favor.

With the win, Washington State improves to 3-0 on the young season and looks every bit like a team ready to make noise this year.

Cougars firing on all cylinders!

Cougars rip apart the Spartans

Article By: taruncheel

The Washington Cougars came to San Jose and left with a very impressive victory. The Cougars forced the Spartans to throw 7, yes 7, interceptions. The Spartans even used 2 different quarterbacks for that feat. San Jose was able to score first, but it went downhill from there. Due to the large deficit, the Spartans had to go to the passing game and when that happens, expect the other team to have more receptions than the Spartans. Chalk IV was still able to get over 100 yards rushing for the day, but had to abandon the run for most of the 2nd half due to the deficit. Brown and Eget need to work on throwing the ball to their own teammates and not the opposition. A pick 6 by the Cougars along with other scoring drives did in the Spartans and San Jose now falls to 2-2.

GG man! Very nice offensive attack and you play great defense!
