El Paso, TX – The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) Miners improved to a dazzling 6-0 on the season, showcasing their resilience and determination in a nail-biting 35-28 victory over the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers on Saturday afternoon. This win marks UTEP's third consecutive victory in conference play, setting a strong tone as they progress through the season.
In a match that was anything but easy, the Miners managed to play their first game without a turnover, a significant achievement that highlighted their discipline on both sides of the ball. Junior running back Jevon Jackson was the star of the show, turning in an electrifying performance with 17 carries for 158 yards and two touchdowns.
Quarterback Skyler Locklear also sparked excitement, playing his first clean game of the season. Locklear was efficient, completing 16 of 20 passes for 234 yards, which included several crucial throws that kept the chains moving.
Wide receiver Kenny Odom was another standout, making four receptions for 94 yards. Odom's explosive plays down the field were crucial in turning the tide of the game at key moments, keeping the Hilltopper defense on high alert throughout the afternoon.
While the offense shined, UTEP's defense faced challenges, particularly in stopping the run and getting off the field. However, their performance was not without merit, as they secured two pivotal interceptions that proved vital in deciding the outcome of the game. These turnovers came at crucial moments, allowing the Miners to maintain their margin and fend off WKU's late-game surge.
"This was a tough game, and I’m proud of how our guys fought from start to finish," Head Coach AK said in the post-game conference. "We didn’t play as clean defensively as we would have liked, but the effort was there. We found a way to make plays when we needed them most."
As UTEP looks ahead, they continue to build momentum, dreaming of not just a successful season but a shot at competing for the conference title.
