Big Plays Doom Wyoming in Close Loss

Article By: Dakshdar

On a crisp evening at War Memorial Stadium, Wyoming seemed poised to notch another key Mountain West win. But in a game where they controlled the tempo and moved the ball effectively, the Cowboys were undone by a handful of explosive plays that turned the tide—and the scoreboard—in a painful 38-35 loss to San Diego State.

Despite outgaining the Aztecs and controlling time of possession, Wyoming couldn’t overcome four backbreaking moments: two interceptions returned for touchdowns and a pair of San Diego State touchdown passes that each traveled more than 65 yards. Those game-changing plays accounted for the majority of the Aztecs' scoring and proved the difference in a tightly contested battle.

While the Cowboys did a lot right—sustaining drives, winning the battle at the line of scrimmage, and showing toughness in the run game—the four big plays they allowed were too much to overcome.

San Diego State left Laramie with a win, while Wyoming was left to rue missed opportunities and the high cost of a few game-breaking mistakes.
