UTEP defeats FIU 32-10 on the road

In a commanding performance this week, the UTEP Miners faced off against the Florida International Panthers, securing a decisive 32-10 victory that highlighted their strengths on both offense and defense.


The Miners set the tone early, striking first with a well-balanced offensive strategy that combined effective passing and a robust ground game. The team's total offense tallied 199 rushing yards and 203 passing yards, with a balanced approach marking their success.

Offensive Highlights

Quarterback Skyler Locklear efficiently guided the Miners with a solid 9 completions on 16 attempts, accumulating 203 passing yards and a passer rating of 162.8. While he did not throw any touchdowns, Locklear's ability to manage the game effectively allowed UTEP to control the tempo throughout the match.

The ground attack was spearheaded by Jevon Jackson, who carried the ball 17 times for an impressive 116 yards and a touchdown, showcasing his ability to burst through defenses with an average of 6.8 yards per carry. Locklear also contributed significantly on the ground, adding another touchdown with 38 rushing yards on 7 attempts. Together, the rushing offense displayed versatility and power, keeping the Panthers' defense on its heels.

In the receiving corps, Trey Goodman stood out, accumulating 109 yards on just 4 receptions, averaging 27.3 yards per catch, and proving to be a deep threat throughout the contest. The contributions from Jevon Jackson in both the rushing and receiving game (2 catches for 74 yards) illuminated UTEP's multifaceted offensive capabilities.

Defensive Masterclass

UTEP's defense was equally impressive, holding Florida International to a mere 10 points and surrendering only 238 total yards. Safety Oscar Moore led the way with 10 tackles, ensuring that the Panthers could not find a rhythm on offense. Dylan Brown-Turner was a standout performer, recording 10 tackles, 1 sack, and consistently applying pressure on the FIU quarterback.

The secondary, highlighted by Xavier Smith, who not only contributed with tackles but also secured 2 interceptions, had a crucial role in stifling any semblance of a passing game from the Panthers. Overall, the Miners’ defense was relentless, combining for 4 sacks and 6 tackles for loss, ultimately dictating the pace of the game.
