Football Recap: Washington State Cougars vs. New Mexico Lobos
The Washington State Cougars hosted the New Mexico Lobos in an exciting and high-scoring matchup, ultimately coming away with a hard-fought victory thanks to a dynamic offensive performance and opportunistic defense.
The game got off to a fast start as Cougars quarterback Mateer connected with Meredith on a deep 59-yard touchdown pass. Washington State added a 30-yard field goal by Janikowski to build early momentum.
In the second quarter, the Lobos struck back with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Dampier to Trujillo, followed by an 18-yard touchdown run by Sanders to briefly take the lead. However, the Cougars responded with an 8-yard touchdown run by Mateer and another Janikowski field goal, this time from 26 yards out.
The third quarter saw both teams continue to trade scores. Dampier ran in a 19-yard touchdown for New Mexico, but Mateer fired back with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Mathers and a 16-yard strike to Mereditch, giving the Cougars the edge.
In the fourth quarter, the Lobos closed the gap with a 41-yard touchdown pass from Dampier to Medford. But Mateer sealed the game with a 2-yard touchdown run, capping off a strong performance.
Washington State's defense played a pivotal role, intercepting Dampier four times and forcing a fumble, which ultimately proved to be the difference in the game.
With the win, the Washington State Cougars improve to 8-1 on the season, continuing their impressive campaign.
