This one was weird from the jump. Western Kentucky could barely pick up their controller on the team select screen — literally. Despite that glitch, the game seemed stable as the first quarter unfolded and the teams traded early scores. Then… everything went dark. Midway through what was shaping up to be a competitive second quarter, the connection dropped like the lights went out in the stadium.
After some quick coordination and good sportsmanship on both sides, the coaches agreed to restart the game and treat the first quarter like it was the second. That workaround worked — kind of. Things got strange, but both teams powered through and played a full, intense game despite the chaos.
Jacksonville State, coming off a tough loss last week, responded with urgency and fire. The game stayed tight through most of the second half, but the Gamecocks eventually pulled away behind a monster performance from their offensive stars.
Tyler Huff was near-flawless, completing 20 of 23 passes for 381 yards and 4 touchdowns. Running back Tre Stewart was a straight-up force, exploding for 198 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns on 20 carries, while also adding 38 yards on 3 catches — though he did cough up one fumble. Tight End Sean Brown was Huff’s go-to target, hauling in 7 passes for 154 yards, and Michael Pettway chipped in 7 grabs of his own for 102 yards and a touchdown.
With one regular season game left — waiting on Coach Barkley and Ball State to return a call — Jacksonville State now sits at 9-2 overall and 7-1 in conference play. That locks up a spot in the CUSA Championship Game.
The College Football Playoff is out of reach this year thanks to a loaded Group of 5 field, but Jax State is right where they need to be — still fighting, still dangerous, and headed for a shot at a conference title.
