BLACKSBURG, VA — In a rivalry older than your granddaddy’s hunting rifle, the Commonwealth Cup once again found its rightful home in Blacksburg, where it’s been renting a permanent room for decades. Virginia Tech handled business with a 24-7 win over the University of Virginia, moving the all-time series to a lopsided 27-5 in favor of the Hokies — a fact that should make every Cavalier wince just a little bit more this morning.
Let’s not sugarcoat it: the Hoos showed up, but only in body — not in spirit, not on the scoreboard, and certainly not in the box score.
Kyron Drones continued to develop into a real problem for opposing defenses, torching UVA through the air with 200+ yards passing. He was poised, efficient, and most importantly — victorious. Meanwhile, Bhayshul Tuten put his name on the stat sheet with a touchdown of his own, keeping the Hokie offense moving and the crowd in Lane Stadium loud all afternoon.
Defensively, it was a clinic in maroon and orange. Keonta Jenkins led the way with 8 tackles, flying around like he had a personal vendetta against UVA’s game plan. And let’s be honest — he probably did.
The Cavaliers managed just one touchdown all day, and even that felt more like a mercy gift than a real threat. The Hokies’ defense bent ever so slightly, but it never broke — just like their grip on this rivalry.
With this win, Virginia Tech closes takes a series lead 27-5, reminding everyone in the Commonwealth (and beyond) that this state still runs on Beamer Ball and lunch-pail defense — not Charlottesville wine tastings and moral victories.
