Miami and San Diego St would collide in this Week 4 showdown in Coral Gables. The Aztecs were looking for some revenge after last years loss at home and Miami was hoping to move to 2-0 in this series.
The Aztecs would get the ball to start the game and they would rely on their run game and it would be very beneficial at times. However, the Miami defense would come up with a big play as Jaden Harris would intercept the pass and get the ball to the Canes offense. It would be short lived as the Canes would go three and out and punt it right back to the Aztecs. This time San Diego St would put together a 13 play drive that would be capped with a 2 yard touchdown run to go up 7-0. Miami looked to have a huge play on their next possession but Xavier Restrepo would fumble when being tackled and the Aztecs would recover. The Canes defense would again make a big play, this time Jadais Richard would intercept the pass. Miami would drive it downfield but Cam Ward would be picked off on a great play by the defense, they would run it back 75 yards for the touchdown and a 14-0 advantage. Ward would throw his 3rd pick of the first half on the next possession and SDSU would capitalize with a 41 yard field goal and a 17-0 halftime lead. "That was a rough first half of football," said Coach Dealer, "We could not get much going on offense and started making some throws that really hurt us and put us into holes. They were able capitalize on turnovers and we got 0 points off ours."
Miami would get the ball to start the 3rd quarter and would quickly get on the board. Ward would hit Restrepo for a 76 yard touchdown reception and the Canes would cut the lead to 17-7. Miam's defense would get a big stop on 3rd down on the Aztecs opening possession forcing them to punt the ball. Miami offense would continue to click, this time putting together a 6 play drive that would end with a Damien Martinez 2 yard touchdown run and the Aztecs lead would be cut to 17-14. San Diego St would get their offense to look like it did in the first half. They would score after 7 plays on a 38 yard pass to the tight end to go back up 24-14. Miami would only need a few plays, this time Ward would find Restrepo for a 58 yard touchdown pass and the lead would be 24-21. Miami's defense would get 2 big sacks and they would have the ball back. The Canes would get the ball into the 5 yard line but were unable to punch it in on 5 runs from inside the 5 yard line. On 4th down from the 1, San Diego St would intercept the pass but would be tackled inside the 5. The Canes defense would come up with a huge play as Francisco Mauigoa would intercept the pass and return it 13 yards for a touchdown. The Aztecs would drive the ball and looked to possibly have a touchdown, but they would drop the ball after the hit. On the very next play Miami would intercept the pass to end the game. "We have to be able to run the ball into the endzone when we have that many shots," said Dealer, "luckily our defense made a great play and was able to get us the W there at the end."
