The Flames looked for a strong start to conference play, but could not solve the issues of shaky road play from its starting QB as two costly turnovers were the difference in a 35-32 loss at Jax State.
The teams traded touchdowns in the opening quarter, and then Liberty took a 14-10 lead midway through the second quarter off a 22-yard pass to standout TE Austin Henderson. Jax State came back though to score on a TD run, and then took advantage of a late pick to move down and score bright before the half for a 20-14 lead. Another Liberty INT led to a 21-yard Jax State receiving TD just 17 seconds into the third quarter, putting the Gamecocks up 28-14. Liberty made a run, scored 10 straight to close within 28-24, and after giving up a TD run in the 4th, they added a score and a 2-point conversion to close to 35-32 just before the 2-min warning. Liberty would not get the ball back, dropping to 0-2 for the year.
